Faqs

Frequently asked questions about CAM

Does natural mean safe?

Nope. CAM therapies involve a wide variety of botanicals and nutritional products, such as herbal and dietary supplements, and vitamins. These products may be harmful when taken by themselves, with other substances, or in large doses.

Are CAM therapies effective?

We don’t know for sure yet. Reports of individual experiences from people who say a CAM therapy has helped them do not mean it will be effective on you. CAM therapies must be compared against accepted and proven ones. The best way to do that is by running randomized controlled clinical trials.

Should I talk with my doctor before starting any CAM therapies?

Absolutely. People who want to use CAM therapies should always talk with their primary care physician. This is important because things that look safe could be harmful or even interfere with your main treatment. It’s also a good idea to find out and consider what scientific studies have been done on the safety and effectiveness of the product or practice that you are thinking about.
